Wardrobe Essentials: Spring Jackets
In the midst of all that’s going on, it’s definitely hard to take a moment to pause and not think too much about it all. I personally have struggled (big time) the past few weeks as a healthcare professional trying to service my customers the best I can while also not putting myself or my employees in danger. It’s been long hours, lots of emotion, and yet we pulled through what I hope is the hardest part.
So since it was my day off today, I actually had a moment to use my creative side of my brain. I first woke up this morning and tackled my closet and our office/art room/dumping zone (way overdue), where I found yet again that we have a lot of STUFF. A few hours later, I now have 4 trash bags to donate and one bag I just dropped off for consignment at Mint Condition.
And after all this, I realized that going forward (at least for some time) I want to focus back on quality, simple, classic pieces so that my closet doesn’t overflow (I’m always a sucker for the statement jewelry or patterned dress or top). So I decided to start a series and I hope you like it. I will be focusing on some basic wardrobe essentials every woman needs: jackets, sneakers, purses, jeans.. I’ll go along and share my favorite essential pieces in each category. At a time of spring cleaning, it’s the perfect time to clean out and narrow down what you have versus what you are missing.
Let’s start with jackets. I have a lot of jackets, although I think my husband may have more (he got me on the jacket train). A good jacket can definitely complete an outfit, and is actually pretty essential; if you have the wrong jacket it can totally ruin your look. I’ll list my essentials and some top picks. Naturally fall and winter will come at a later time.
Jean Jacket
Every woman needs a jean jacket for those casual, spring and summer nights or running around town. I personally brought only one jacket to Argentina, an old jean jacket from Vince (similar here). Traditional jean is great (and Canadian tuxedos are in right now), but my current favorites are other neutral shades like green, white, or tan. I just purchased this L’Agence green jacket from The Shoe Hive and can’t wait to wear it all spring and summer.
Leather Jacket
I personally did not think I was edgy enough for a leather jacket until I tried one in this beautiful cream color. A leather jacket is another staple, and can be great to add on top of a dress or tank for date night or out with the girls. Again, investing in a timeless leather jacket will mean you really only have to buy one or maybe two and it will last you. The style doesn’t change, and it always elevates an outfit and creates more texture to your outfit.
Trench
Trenches are hard for me in that you have to spend a lot to get the perfect one in my opinion (think Burberry like this and this) and so I still have my perfect tan trench on my “wishlist” until I am willing to fork out the money. In the meantime, I make due with some great options. I love this leopard take on a trench from Periwinkle. It’s neutral and has a great silhouette. Why is a trench a need? Not just for rainy days, but to have an elegant look over dresses, skirts, or pant suits that other jackets won’t do justice to.
Blazer
Ok, now we are at my favorite category. I love a good blazer, and have always felt that every woman needs one of good quality. Again, they are timeless pieces that you can take from work to home, look elevated out on the town, and again, will last a lifetime. While I have a good number of blazers now, I love a good black blazer from Veronica Beard because you can change out the dickeys for a different look. I also just purchased another classic black blazer by Smythe from Tsalt because the fit and fabric was too perfect and offered me a lighter option from my Veronica Beard. Fun colors that pop are great too, as they add some excitement while still looking professional and put together.
Let me know what you guys think! Are there jackets I’m missing? What category is worth investing in most?
